Description:
Saqqara, Egypt has a significant number of mummified animals, potentially containing the largest collections in Egypt. Estimates suggest that up to 70 million animal mummies were created across various sites in Egypt, with Saqqara being a key location due to its catacombs dedicated to animal burials. These mummies were offerings to deities. Pilgrims would purchase one and place it in the appropriate temple. These boards represent the sacrificial death of the animal, the ceremonial wrapping and the later resurrection, renewal and rebirth.
